This I Believe Essays
Reflection:
To come up with my belief I brainstormed some things that I believed in. I narrowed it down to reincarnation because it had real meaning and importance to me. The importance was connected to my uncle and how he came back as a hawk. I grew personally with my confidence when I read my essay and afterwards a parent came up to me and told me how they liked my essay and how it hit home with them.
I was proud of my essay because of the imagery and all around writing. I’ve never been a strong writer but i felt happy and proud of this piece. Imagery was something that I struggled with during the writing process of this essay. But when I got my ideas on the page it came out well. I felt this because when I read out “ when I saw that hawk soaring through the sky a lot came back to me” I got a lot of positive energy back.
I think my essay could’ve been better with a more defined topic and had better grammar. I think it was hard for some people to get my essay when I talked about reincarnation then this idea of grievance. Having those two themes mixed was a struggle to narrow down. Then with grammar I remember practicing and reading my essay and it just didn’t make sense. And in the future, as a writer I just want to be able to write strong TEA paragraphs. It’s been something I’ve been bad at this year.

Mask/Identity Project
- Project Description: In this project we made mask’s that focused on our identity and the content we learned in this project. This project was based of the Cycle Of Socialization. The Cycle of Socialization talks about how a lot of influences like people, school, culture etc… all impact a person. Through learning about the Cycle we made a mask. We all plastered our own faces and proceeded to make a mask that showed a person's identity. We then exhibited our masks and shared the meaning behind our masks and some of the major takeaways from this project.
- My Project: For my mask at first I was kind of just mixed up. I didn’t know what to do so I randomly came up with the idea of marionette doll but in the sense that my strings are easy to pull and that I pull other peoples stings. Through the project and learning about the content I took it way deeper into what it finally came out as. I think the things I’m most proud of from this project was the hand that I created for my mask and my essay. I’ve never worked with plaster before so doing that was an accomplishment especially for how well it came out. I’m super proud of my essay because I feel that it really talked about the problems that I learned about in this project in a clear and powerful way.
- Refinement: If I was to go back and do this project over again I would change a lot. First off I would have added a lot more to my mask. I’m happy with how it came out but I feel like there could’ve been more to it. I would’ve added more color to the mask for sure. I also would’ve like to make the doll and the strings look more refined. When it was hanging it was crooked and kind of sloppy. And from that I know what I need to do better for next time. Some goals that I have for future projects are to make time for refinement and not start working on my project at the last minute.
- Exhibition: Our exhibition was in a stand and deliver format. Each student set their mask up and parents and community members walked around and asked students about their masks. One of my favorite parts of the exhibition was talking to a man named Bryce. My mask was focused on toxic masculinity and me and him had a really deep conversation about it. He talked about how he didn’t learn about toxic masculinity unitil college. He also said that because we have learned about toxic masculinity at a younger age we will have such an advantage to the kids that don’t. This stuck out to me just because our conversation was so deep and profound.
- Revisiting The Essential Questions:
- How is my identity constructed?
- How do social forces and personal choice interact in the construction of identity?
- How can an individual break the harmful cycles of socialization and reinforce the positive cycles of liberation?
